DIY: Dollhouse Bookcase (From An Old Bookcase)

dollhouse bookcase

I really love dollhouses. For me, every little girl deserves to have a dollhouse in their room. A dollhouse bookcase is also nice to display books and toys. I want one but I don’t want to spend a lot of money just for the dollhouse, and besides, I would love to make it on my own. Even I know it takes a lot of effort and sweats.

We have a few bookcases that we do not use anymore. I saw a lot of tutorials on Pinterest on how to convert an old bookcase into a nice dollhouse bookcase. We have bookcases that we do not use anymore, and all I need is the courage to do it. So, one day I went to the garage and checked the bookcases. There were four of them and I only need one so I choose the one that was the cleanest. I started visualizing it and then decided to try my best to convert it into a dollhouse. A big dollhouse where there’s enough space to store some books and toys and even some tall dolls. Then, I just started doing it.

I cannot share with you the correct steps by steps guide on how to make this dollhouse bookcase, but I can share what I did to build it. Unfortunately, I didn’t record the measurements as everything is just estimated.

Here’s what I did:

  • 1. First, I cut the bookcase in half. I used a normal saw and saw it while standing.
  • 2. After cutting it into two parts, I focused on the lower one. I didn’t touch the first level, but removed the second and adjusted it and added one more level. I used the wood from the other half to make the roof. Making the roof was the hardest part. I asked hubby’s help to build the roof. He cannot do it, so I tried again and made the roof on my own.
  • 3. Then I asked hubby to cut a few more kinds of wood for the divider at each level. I attached the dividers using some screws.
  • 4. After it was finished I thought it was very nice and I was so happy with it. Hubby thought it was too big for Rianna’s room and it should’ve been shorter. But for me, it was just a perfect size.
  • 5. I painted it white. Also, I didn’t know painting furniture takes a lot of effort. It was hard. I could not make a perfect matte finished. I did a few coats until I stopped and said maybe this is okay.  I couldn’t be happier when it’s done!
  • 6. I put there some books, dolls, photo frames, and some toys. I like it and I think Rianna loved it too!

A few days later, I also made a smaller dollhouse. This time I want it a real dollhouse and not a bookcase. I am still looking for some dollhouse furniture and I am not sure when I can show it all to you. Maybe when it is totally complete and with all the furniture, etc.

So what do you think of my DIY Dollhouse bookcase?
Do you like it?
